 **Hisham Matar’s** new book is *A Month in Siena*. His critically acclaimed memoir, The Return: Fathers, Sons and the Land in Between, won the Pulitzer Prize for Autobiography. His debut novel, *In the Country of Men*, was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award, and won the inaugural Arab American Book Award. His second novel, *Anatomy of a Disappearance*, was named one of the best books of the year by the *Guardian* and the *Chicago Tribune*.  
   
**Claire Messud** is a novelist and Joseph Y. Bae and Janice Lee Senior Lecturer on Fiction, Harvard University.
