 Laurie Anderson presents *Spending the War Without You: Virtual Backgrounds*. *The City* is the fifth in a series of six lectures, looking at the challenges we face as artists and citizens as we reinvent our culture with ambiguity and beauty. This talk will consider teachers, activism and politics.

 Presented by **[Laurie Anderson](https://laurieanderson.com/)**, one of America’s most renowned – and daring – creative pioneers. Known primarily for her multimedia presentations, she has cast herself in roles as varied as visual artist, composer, poet, photographer, filmmaker, electronics whiz, vocalist, and instrumentalist.

 Introduced by **[Suzannah Clark](https://scholar.harvard.edu/suzannahclark/home)**, Director of the Mahindra Humanities Center and Morton B. Knafel Professor of Music at Harvard University, and **[Anne Shreffler](https://music.fas.harvard.edu/shreffler.html)**, James Edward Ditson Professor of Music at Harvard University.

 Moderated by **[A.M. Homes](http://www.amhomesbooks.com)**, author of *Days of Awe* and *This Book Will Save Your Life.*

 The [Charles Eliot Norton Professorship in Poetry ](/norton-lectures)was endowed in 1925. Harvard’s preeminent lecture series in the arts and humanities, the Norton Lectures recognize individuals of extraordinary talent who, in addition to their particular expertise, have the gift of wide dissemination and wise expression.
