## SPEAKER: DANIEL BLANK, HARVARD SOCIETY OF FELLOWS

When King James I visited Oxford in 1605, he was greeted with a short play entitled *Tres Sibyllae* by Matthew Gwinne, a Fellow of St. John's College. This paper explores the connection between *Tres Sibyllae* and Shakespeare's *Macbeth*, likely written and performed the following year. By viewing Gwinne's play in the context of James' royal visit, we stand to gain a fuller understanding of Shakespeare's tragedy — as well as the academic and political events that shaped it.
