###  About the Speakers

 **[Bernardine Evaristo](https://bevaristo.com)** is the author of the 2019 Booker Prize-winning novel *[Girl, Woman, Other](https://shop.harvard.com/book/9780802156983)*. Her numerous other works span the genres of fiction, verse fiction, short fiction, poetry, essays, literary criticism, and radio and theatre drama. Other fiction titles include *[Mr. Loverman](https://shop.harvard.com/book/9781617752728)*, *[Blonde Roots](https://shop.harvard.com/book/9781594484346)*, and *[Lara](https://shop.harvard.com/book/9781852248314)*. Her first non-fiction book, *[Manifesto: On Never Giving Up](https://shop.harvard.com/book/9780802158901)*, will be published in 2022 by Grove Atlantic. Her writing is celebrated for its experimentation, daring, subversion, and challenging the myths of Afro-diasporic identities and histories. A staunch and longstanding activist and advocate for the inclusion of artists and writers of color, Evaristo has initiated several successful schemes to ensure increased representation in the creative industries. She is Professor of Creative Writing at Brunel University London.

 **[Gish Jen](https://www.gishjen.com)** is the author of the novels *The Resisters*, *World and Town*, *The Love Wife*, *Mona in the Promised Land*, and *Typical American*. Her short work has been published in the *New Yorker,* the *Atlantic*, and dozens of other periodicals, anthologies and textbooks. She has been awarded a Lannan Literary Award for Fiction, a Guggenheim fellowship, a Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study fellowship, and a Mildred and Harold Strauss Living; she has also delivered the William E. Massey, Sr. Lectures in the History of American Civilization at Harvard University. She is currently a Visiting Professor at Harvard.
