This book examines Charles Dickens's fictions alongside publications emanating from Parliament. It argues that Dickens and Parliament were engaged in competitive efforts to represent the People at a crucial moment in the history of representative democracy--when the British government was under enormous political pressure to expand the franchise beyond a narrow band of male landowners.

	About the Speaker

Carolyn Vellenga Berman is Associate Professor and Co-Chair of Literary Studies at Eugene Lang College, The New School. She is the author of Creole Crossings: Domestic Fiction and the Reform of Colonial Slavery and, most recently, of Dickens and Democracy in the Age of Paper: Representing the People (OUP, 2022).

Please click the file below to access the Introduction and Coda.
