This book talk, centered around Immeasurable Weather (Duke University Press, 2023), engages this question by illuminating how meteorological data science bolstered systems of settler expansion, gendered science, and resource extraction in the United States, as well as how the inheritances of data science have accumulated in today’s world. These inheritances are more than numerical and pose complicated questions for ways of living and longing in a world shaped by extreme weather and our understanding of it through climate change data.
Sara J. Grossman is Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies on the Johanna Alderfer Harris and William H. Harris, M.D Professorship in Environmental Studies at Bryn Mawr College. She has published a book of poems, Let the House of Body Fall, and her first academic monograph, Immeasurable Weather, was published by Duke University Press in August 2023. She works at the intersection of U.S. environmental history and creative praxis, utilizing historical knowledge to mobilize for just environmental futures.
