Female artists as gifts. French public collections and the art of making women artists invisible

French public collections contain just a little more than 20% of female artists’ works. Historically, these collections have been assembled through purchase and, increasingly now, through donations. This talk looks at the dynamics of collection building and the role of gifts in the invisibility of women artists.
