Practicing Play and Civic Identity by Scot Osterweil:
Through play we continuously shape and reshape our identity. At its best, play can lead us to recognize new capabilities within ourselves and possibilities for constructive action. This talk will present two games that enable players to build their identities in alignment with greater civic engagement. They are offered as illustrative examples of what is possible now and in the future within the space of games in civic life.
Practicing Futures: Bringing Creativity, Fantasy and Community to Civic Lives by Sangita Shresthova (PhD):
Defined as the practice of envisioning social change that supports a movement towards a better world, civic imagination helps activate one’s own civic agency, imagine communities, build respect and understanding for the perspectives of others, challenge assumptions about place-based limitations, and create opportunities envisioning aspirational futures that have not yet been experienced. This talk will be a guide to the civic imagination for those interested in expanding creativity in civil realms!
