EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY STUDIES

SPEAKERS: JENNY REEDS (COLLEGE OF THE HOLY CROSS), OLIVIA CARPENTER (UNIVERSITY OF YORK)

Jenny Reed works on eighteenth-century literature and culture with a focus on British empire. She is the Managing Editor of Studies in Romanticism at Boston University, and currently holds a visiting position in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century literature at the College of the Holy Cross. Her book project is titled Redrawing the Map: Affective Mapping of British Empire in the Long Eighteenth Century. The project looks at how eighteenth-century Britain reconciled the emergence of a culture of sympathy and sensibility with its imperial ambitions across the globe.

Olivia Carpenter is a lecturer in Literature whose research focuses on Black Studies, Critical Race Theory, and literary history. Her first book project, Marriage Interruptus: Black Marriage Interrupted in Domestic Fiction, 1791-1853, examines Black characters in late eighteenth and early nineteenth-century British marriage plots, incorporating approaches from legal studies, studies of women, gender, and sexuality, art and visual studies, and material history. She has also written on how eighteenth-century literature and culture continues to make claims on our own twenty-first-century moment, particularly with respect to questions of race and racism. Her essays have appeared in Studies in Eighteenth-Century Culture and The Eighteenth Century: Theory and Interpretation. Olivia completed her PhD at Harvard University in 2021.
