HISTORY OF THE BOOK

SPEAKER: DANIEL BLANK, HARVARD SOCIETY OF FELLOWS

When King James I visited Oxford in 1605, he was greeted with a short play entitled Tres Sibyllae by Matthew Gwinne, a Fellow of St. John's College. This paper explores the connection between Tres Sibyllae and Shakespeare's Macbeth, likely written and performed the following year. By viewing Gwinne's play in the context of James' royal visit, we stand to gain a fuller understanding of Shakespeare's tragedy — as well as the academic and political events that shaped it.
