About the Speakers
Douglas Stuart is a Scottish-American author. His New York Times-bestselling debut novel Shuggie Bain won the 2020 Booker Prize and the Sue Kaufman Prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, was a finalist for the National Book Award and the PEN/Hemingway Award, and was named one of the “25 Best Books of the 21st Century” by the Sunday Times (UK). His next novel, Young Mungo, was a national bestseller, longlisted for the Andrew Carnegie Medal and a finalist for the British Book Award, and one of the most highly acclaimed books of the year. His latest novel, John of John, was published in May 2026. His stories have been published in the New Yorker and his essays have featured on Literary Hub. He lives in New York City.
Charlie Tyson is a Junior Fellow at the Harvard Society of Fellows. His writing has appeared in the New Yorker, The Atlantic, Harper’s, The Guardian, The Nation, The Yale Review, Bookforum, The Chronicle of Higher Education, The Baffler, and elsewhere, and his work has been translated into multiple languages. His academic monograph The Art of Idleness: The Questioning of Work in Modern Literature, a study of literary representations of idleness from the late nineteenth century to the present, is under contract with Harvard University Press. He is also writing a book for general readers about the dark side of the American work ethic.
