SPEAKERS: Anton Hur, Independent Literary Translator and Writer

Anton Hur’s translations have breathed fresh air into the stylistic handling of Korean in English; his 22 book-length translations are playful, slangy, exciting, and inventive, and range from historically significant writers such as Kang Kyeong-ae and Pak Kyung-ni to Bora Chung’s Cursed Bunny (shortlisted for the 2022 International Booker Prize) and Sang Young Park’s Love in the Big City (longlisted in the same year). Hur will reflect on his path into literary translation and the craft of translation, as part of a forthcoming book project on the art and craft of translation.

About the Speakers

Anton Hur is the author of Toward Eternity and the translator of Bora Chung’s Cursed Bunny, Baek Sehee’s I Want to Die but I Want to Eat Tteokbokki, Lee Seong-bok’s Indeterminate Inflorescence, Kyung-Sook Shin’s Violets, and others. He was double-longlisted and shortlisted for the International Booker Prize, a finalist for the National Book Award, and nominated for the Dublin Literary Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award. He resides in Seoul.
